Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center

We drove back to Anchorage and on our way we stopped at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, a "nonprofit organization  dedicated to preserving Alaska’s wildlife through conservation, public education, and quality animal care. AWCC takes in injured and orphaned animals year-round and provides spacious enclosures and quality animal care. Animals that cannot be released into the wild are given a permanent home at the center. Wood Bison plod through 65 acres of tidal flat terrain, as part of a program that will one day restore the species to the Alaskan wilderness."

The above quotation comes from their literature, but does not adequately explain the good work they do. We saw two young male moose that had been found abandoned, a porcupine that had once been a pet, bears that had been injured and much more. It was well worth stopping to see this effort.

This center is at the junction of Turnagain Arm, on the breathtaking drive from Seward to Anchorage.
